This happens without having to run as root. I expect it affects
thousands of people, not the handful that have logged in here and
clicked the link.

I've just switched to the latest Ubuntu from Mac OS X "Lion":
    Ubuntu 11.10 (oneiric)
    Gnome 2.32.1
    Kernel 3.0.0-16-generic

gedit reports its release (under Help->About): 3.2.3

I regularly apply ALL updates to my machine.

While the editor is functional (so far, it's the closest I can find to
BBEdit -- I had the paid-for version), those extra tabs are incredibly
annoying (especially if they mean gedit is consuming extra resources).
