I have the same symptoms in K3B, Inkscape, Gimp, and the ubuntu software center.
The problem appeared after I updated ubuntu 11.10 on 3/22/2012 and installed cairo-dock immediately after. I'm not sure which one may have caused the problem. Now I can't get rid of those icons and they are really distracting. These are the changes I made to ubuntu 11.10 that started the problem.
