Public bug reported:

When trying to log in after the update to unity 5.8, the system locks up
either on the login screen, or just shows the wallpaper without the
panel or launcher. I can still move the mouse, but there is no response
to any clicking. The only solution for me was to go to the alt+ctrl+F1
terminal and restart the system. Unity2D seems to work fine. Attached is
a (hopefully helpful) log of unity during its startup.
