Public bug reported:

Fresh install of Precise using the beta ISO and with all the upgrades
applied since then.

Don't have the menu option to hibernate; only suspend. And the system
settings -> power utility shows hibernate greyed out on the drop-downs.

LVM

System used to run a 2009 release of ubuntu which is now out of support, and
was built using logical volume manager.
(hibernate worked on the original build)

As I wanted to retain some filesystems, continued support of LVM was
required.

So, I added lvm to the usb boot image, and also added it to the
installed machine via chroot.

It was, however, a clean install - the '/', '/boot', and '/home'
filesystems were specified in the installer.

my research has identified the following

1. I am running the i915 driver referenced in Bug #961932 and so could be
susceptible to that memory corruption bug
2. Bug #954668 relates to hibernation on precise; but that machine suspends
to disk, but doesn't restore from it. I can't suspend this to disk.

I have now tripped over:
http://askubuntu.com/questions/94754/how-to-modify-policykit-to-allow-hibernation-in-upower

ie Bug #812394 - which I need to investigate further.
