I, too, recently dealt with failed user login attempts, though on
Xubuntu 11.10. In short, after a "successful" login the user was
returned to the login screen. In my experience, the loop was indefinite.

As for the lead in to this behavior, my Xubuntu session simply froze
after I moved a window by the title bar. The arrow pointer became a hand
for moving the window, but would not function in any way. I do remember
having some keyboard functionality (e.g., ALT would highlight menubar
options) though, but that's about it.

Figuring my session was damaged, I killed the lightdm session from TTY1,
and I deleted ~/.cache/sessions. This did not remedy the login loop.

Per http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=11795207#post11795207 on
the same bug, I was able to find that .ICEauthority had become owned by
root. I changed ownership back to the appropriate user:group, rebooted,
and now everything is working again.

For what it's worth, the initial screen freeze has happened to me twice
now on a no frills Xubuntu installation. The first time the screen
froze, however, I did a hard reboot and everything worked fine
afterward.
