Since the bug is nearly a year old I had only the options 'wipe ubuntu and install something else' or 'try newer kernels' in the mean time -- no one would have the patience to wait so long for a fix. Luckily the 'newer kernel' helped, in this case 3.0.0-16-generic. I may have updated X. I forgot the rest, but I get X and direct rendering and video overlay now. I can't find the launchpad password, is it possible to remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag with some special syntax in the mail?
