3.2.0-20-generic-pae #32-Ubuntu SMP Thu Mar 22 02:43:40 UTC 2012 i686
i686 i386 GNU/Linux (also with 64bit - same kernel).
Same 'Could not apply the stored configuration for monitors none of the
selected modes were compatible with the possible modes:' error message.
Renaming ~/.config/monitors.xml to ~/.config/-xmonitors.xml-x (you can
remove the file, but I prefer to rename so I have a copy of it). If you
run 'System Settings|Display' and reset the monitor settings, the file
will be recreated & the error message appears on the next boot. I've
replicated this on both 32bit and 64bit Precise 12.04 systems. Put the
file back, restart, error message.
Sample monitors.xml file that causes the error message:
<monitors version="1">
<configuration>
<clone>no</clone>
<output name="default">
<vendor>???</vendor>
<product>0x0000</product>
<serial>0x00000000</serial>
<width>1270</width>
<height>885</height>
<rate>0</rate>
<x>0</x>
<y>0</y>
<rotation>normal</rotation>
<reflect_x>no</reflect_x>
<reflect_y>no</reflect_y>
<primary>yes</primary>
</output>
</configuration>
</monitors>
Workaround was found by searching online. Sample post mentioning the workaround:
