Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.20
I did recently install kernel 2.6.20-16-generic, and found that it
failed to boot. Searching in the forums I found about irqpoll, which
appeared to solve that problem at the cost of much longer boot time.
However, once booted into said kernel, an icon appears in the desktop of
an empty optical disc at seemingly random times. Problem is, said disk
does not exist. The drive in which the disc supposedly is becomes
unresponsive when said icon appears, both /media/cdrom0 and
/media/cdrom1 are still empty (as they should if there are no discs in
the drives), and trying to open the nonexistant disc with Nautilus will
fail with various results: either Nautilus will open burn:///, or no
window will open at all (not even a dialog box with an error message),
or worse of all, the whole system will hang until I force a reboot.
Needless to say, I'm back to 20-15. However, aptitude is constantly
trying to remove "unused" packages linux-headers-2.6.20-15 and linux-
headers-2.6.20-15-generic whenever I try to install anything, so it's
back to APT for me - at least until the problems with 20-16 are solved.
** Affects: linux-source-2.6.20 (Ubuntu)
Importance: Undecided
Status: Unconfirmed
