I have a eeepc 1001pxd. The fan would never come on, and the computer would shut down when it got too hot. I upgraded to 12.04 beta and installed eee-control-tray 0.9.6 so I can see temperature, fan speed and fan RPM. When the computer is started cold, the Fan RPM stays at 0, no matter how hot the temperature gets. If the computer is restarted when it is warm, the fan comes on and stays around 4000 rpm.
