Well, I just tested it with KDE and it works beautifully. Closing the lid on the same system with the same kernel:
KDE works (suspends to RAM) GNOME and Unity do NOT work (nothing happens) This doesn't look like a kernel issue to me. It's looks more like a problem with GNOME/Unity handling of power events.
