Thank you for your reply.

Right now it is not an issue any more, but I'm not sure whether that's
because of recent updates or because of the intermittent nature of the
problem.

right now I'm running Ubuntu 11.10 (After next reboot it will be kernel
3.0.0 , just installed updates. uname -r returns 3.0.0-16-generic
already)

Do you know a better way to test this than by web surfing waiting until
the LW153 looses its connection with the router? Can I poke at certain
things to make it disconnect if something is incorrectly programmed?

I'll try apport again once more, maybe later I can try the newest
development release.

** Description changed:

Sweex LW153 (RT3070 based) wifi USB disconnects at random on Ubuntu
  10.10

  How to reproduce:
  Get a sweex LW153
  Get a fresh Ubuntu 10.10
  Plug in the LW153
  Connect to your WiFi
  Open firefox
Go to any webpage (try watching a video)
Wait a random amount of time (seconds to minutes)
WiFi disconnects and won't reconnect automatically. To reconnect either
disable/re-enable wireless networking or unplug/replug LW153.

LW153 is based on RT3070 chip. If I run modprobe it shows RT2800, not
  RT3070.

Any more information needed? feel free to ask.
