I've installed all the available updates so that my kernel is now up to
date. When I first restarted, the squeal sound reappeared and the volume
problems were still there. However, I just uncommented that line back
into alsa-base and restarted again. This time, the squealing had gone
(as expected) but the volume control also works.

So my problem is fixed but it looks as if that line should be in alsa-
base (for this particular laptop model anyway) by default. The current
default configuration doesn't work out of the box.
