Thanks for the report, but I don't think this is actually a problem. Each of 
the symbols you list have the same meanings as the same symbols used elsewhere:
1. The pips in the messaging and sound menus have the same meaning when used in 
the launcher.
2. The checkmarks in the network menu have the same meaning when used in 
checkboxes generally.
3. The dots in the session menu have the same meaning when used in radio 
buttons generally.
4. The check symbols in the session menu have the same meaning when used in the 
login screen.

In future we might be able to remove the distinction between
applications that are running and not, so we won't need (1). But even
without that simplification, we're using different symbols to mean
fundamentally different things, and that's good.
