Looking at my own system running GNOME and Xinerama on a radeon with
Feisty loaded, it's using 274mb virtual memory at an uptime of 14 days.

Remember this is virtual memory. If it was using 400mb RAM and you only
had, say 1gb, then this would be a worry, but if you have a lot of swap
space allocated for your system, then I wouldn't be surprised to see
certain apps like X using large amounts of it.

The important thing is if it is leaking. Does your system remain stable
at around 400mb or does it grow until it consumes a larger proportion of
available memory? If so, then it is definitely a bug needing to be
explored. If you're interested in further investigation of memory
issues with X and other applications, a useful tool to learn is
Valgrind.

Since this appears to be normal behavior, I'm going to close this.
However, if you do discover a leak or other bad behavior, please feel
free to reopen (or open a new bug).
