I'm getting this error when I try to boot a vanilla-kernel without using
a initrd. I have configured everything I need (chipset driver, file
systems, ...). The entries in the menu.lst are fine (they're the same as
for ubuntu's generic kernel - which works -, except for the initrd-
line), so I don't think it's a grub-related problem.

I had no problems running my own kernel with Breezy or Dapper. This
problem first occured to me in Edgy.
