I had done an update before the dist-upgrade using
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
Then I did the dist-upgrade
But I'm happy to help, so I've just done an update

I am just rebooting to get the disk checking out of the way.
I don't have easy physical access to the machine, I am using nomachine's
nx to access it (in case this is a clue). I am using PUTTY (ssh) to
connect in with terminal access.
