Works for me: I just tried it here, with an USB stick I had around:
[cerdea-aws]cerdea@xango4-wired:~$ sudo dd bs=100M
if=/home/cerdea/ISO/precise-server-amd64.iso of=/dev/sdb
6+1 records in
6+1 records out
722776064 bytes (723 MB) copied, 9.50312 s, 76.1 MB/s
[cerdea-aws]cerdea@xango4-wired:~$ dd --version
dd (coreutils) 8.13
(...)
[cerdea-aws]cerdea@xango4-wired:~$ dpkg -l coreutils\* | grep -E ^ii
ii coreutils 8.13-3ubuntu3
GNU core utilities
ii coreutils-dbgsym 8.13-3ubuntu3
debug symbols for package coreutils
[cerdea-aws]cerdea@xango4-wired:~$
I then:
(1) locally mounted the USB stick -- seems to be OK, filesystem recognised.
(2) move the USB stick to another machine, and booted from it -- installation
starts
(3) checked disk for errors: no errors.
Can you describe, step by step, your tries? Please include full output
for 'dd'.
