Hi! I tried your suggestion (modify the GSetteings database of lightdm
user), but I did not manage to succeed. I always get error using
gsettings in the command line.

administrator@Precise-VM:~$ sudo su -s /bin/sh lightdm
[sudo] password for administrator:
$ gsettings get com.canonical.unity-greeter draw-grid
true
$ gsettings set com.canonical.unity-greeter draw-grid false

Any other idea? I must agree with you: this seems to bring more
problems/difficulties than easiness to configure unity-greeter's
behavior.
