OK! A step forward! If I remove the Nvidia proprietary drivers my system boots without using the flag acpi=off
However, in doing that, I cannot see the logon screen (but I hear the startup sound and my mouse glows to show that there is activity). I have tried the two different Nvidia drivers and they both produce the same result. I am considering downloading the drivers from the Nvidia website and trying that. I have yet to fathom the correlation to acpi being off and the Nvidia driver being updated though.
