Hi Paddy! I simply cannot reproduce this bug when following your steps.
In each case, the "Show N Technical Items" panel disappears upon
selection of any of the items "Canonical Partners", "For Purchase" and
any PPA.
Could you please try launching from the terminal as shown:
$ software-center
And then reproduce the bug, and paste any output in the terminal to this
bug?
