Some more information (sorry it's scattered):

I have installed grbl on the arduino, though I was having similar, but
not the same, problems with the arduino clone (system freezes but only
after a small amount of time or when I tried to program it).

I tried plugging it in after reverting to an earlier version of the
kernel and it didn't immediately freeze the system.  Only after I
changed the baud rate and tried to send characters to /dev/ttyS0 did it
freeze the system.

I have used a different cable and verified the system still freezes.  I
have plugged the device into a windows machine with no error.

Any help is appreciated!
