I tried to change my boot options to send you feedback and I find that
the option :

 "set gfxpayload=$linux_gfx_mode"

replaced for debugging by

 "set gfxpayload=text"

is enough to allow me to boot in text mode. In this way, I can boot in
normal mode to have access to a prompt. Then, I have to run 'sudo start
lightdm' yet to log in using graphical mode (but I think it is what we
expect with gfxpayload=text).

So, I hope it can help you !
