What would be helpful is if you could test this problem with the latest development release of Ubuntu. Could you do so via ISO CD images available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ ?
If it remains an issue in the development release, could you run in this release the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal).
