Well I will try your instructions. But when I said that the upstream
kernel failed to boot, I just had the system freeze at the blank purple
screen after making grub selection. This is even with disabling the
splash stuff in /etc/grub/default.

There is one new problem though. I have returned the problematic drive
for replacement so I am not sure what test case I will have left over.
Its unfortunate but please do let me know how else I can help. Perhaps
if you know the locations of historical boot logs that I can dig up and
attach here?
