** Description changed:

  Problem
The linux kernel 3 series sometimes fails to get past the grub menu.

  Details:
In my grub menu, I have following selection which does not always end in a
booted OS:
  linux 3.*

The linux 3.* images don't get past a black screen with a white blinking
cursor in the top left corner.

There was a 2 series under previous kernels which works:
  linux 2.*

  Workaround:
If you don't have a 2.6 kernel, as is my case now that I deleted the
linux-image-2.6.38-11-generic since the 3 series was behaving up until now, you
can just shut the the computer off & go for a walk and try again. I don't know
why but this seems to work rather than recycling in and out of grub. This kind
of behaviour would make me think it's a failing hardware issue but the fact
that there's others with the issue, some non-apple hardware users such as in
the link below and
http://askubuntu.com/questions/64771/can-no-longer-boot-with-refit-and-grub-on-early-2006-macbook-pro
make me think software issue. (I didn't write that last link, just in case
someone is thinking I'm cross posting.)

The fact that I've tried updating (from the hd running Ubuntu) and
reinstalling grub using a guided procedure via recatux to no avail and
that selecting the 2.6 kernel makes boot ups reliably makes me think a
  kernel issue is at fault.

  Other details:
- Although I run a macbook pro 1,1 from 2006, from the looks of the issue

it's not just a macbook pro problem.

I'm running only Ubuntu on this mbp 1,1 and I've installed bootcamp (to get
the hybrid mbr and thus video accel). I installed rEFIT at one point, but I'm
sure it got overwritten since I installed Ubuntu because it no longer has been
visible. I have an ati video card so it's not the nvideo issue other people are
reporting.

Interestingly, superdisk grub 1.99b1 recognizes my Ubuntu install but
does not boot it, unlike my previous Debian install, where my problem
was the reverse ... Debian install booted from super grub, and where the
Debian installed (onto the hd) grub never configured properly during
  install.

I did infrequently have this issue with the previous stable release but
always used the workaround provided herein. The Precise development
releases never manifested this problem until this morning.
