Hi Alex, I downloaded the upstream Debian packages (libexpect-php5-0.3.1) and rebuilt on oneiric. This fixed the linking issue such that the libexpect.so symlink is no longer needed.
Using libexpect-php5-0.2.9 resulted in an "undefined symbol: Tcl_ErrnoMsg" message. It looks like oneiric (and later?) requires 0.3.1.
