Public bug reported:

gnome-mplayer is great except for the volume widget. Please remove it
or fix it.

I can crash gnome-mplayer by using the volume widget.
steps:
click once on volume widget to open the pop-up volume control. click the plus.
right click on the video twice or 3 times. should not crash

Also I have consistent problems when the volume widget steals mouse focus.
Whereever I move the mouse, the volume goes up and down.
Also I have consistent problems when the pop-up volume control appears, but
will not disappear until I click the little drag bar once.
