Public bug reported:

I sent a message on Empathy, to a contact, suddenly the X session
vanished into a TTY with a what looked like a stack trace - but I could
still hear the sounds in the session. I cycled through the TTY's and
promptly found X doing fine in TTY7, with Empathy complaining that it
doesn't respond.
