All I can say for sure it this: After I upgraded to 12.04 beta2, the yahoo chess applet wouldn't work.
And, to the best of my memory, I think I uninstalled icedtea 6 (and 7 if it was install). Then I installed sun-java6-plugin. At some point I must have [re]installed icedtea-6-plugin AND icedtea-7-plugin. What a mess; I cannot confirm why the Yahoo Chess java applet didn't work after the upgrade to Ubuntu 12.04 beta2, but something I mentioned above made it start working. I'm probably not supposed to have both the icedtea-6-plugin and icedtea-7-plugin installed at the same time; you can see in my Synaptic Package Manager screenshot, that "!" icons are next to those packages. The option to "mark for upgrade" is available for those two packages, and doing so removes the other. Are they mutually exclusive? Somehow I got them both installed.
