A workaround for plain CGI mode is to run using sudo or suexec instead of the included C wrapper to make wwsympa run as user and group "sympa". The sudo wrapper is no longer bundled with Ubuntu though, and suexec won't work out of the box either, so this remains at least a documentation bug. Instructions for using sudo or suexec are at http://www.sympa.org/manual/web-interface.
