It happened again. xsession-errors shows:

At this point I switched to the console to cp .xsession-error, and instead of
shutting down, got a dialog:
"Shutdown Failed

Not Authorized
[Quit]"
Clicking the Quit button logged me out, showing in .xsession-errors:
