This problem is not fixed for me. It happens every time I turn my computer on. It usually doesn't recur once I log out and log back in, but occasionally my keyboard becomes unresponsive as well so I have to hold my power key to shut down. I am a non-technical person trying to use linux so I really don't know how to report any more specifics. I am using a Dell Inspiron 1545 with Ubuntu 11.10. I did a fresh install of 11.10 and I do all updates that come out. None of them have fixed this problem for me. It often freezes in the middle of my work and I have to log out an loose everything I have done. It has become very frustrating.
Some have suggested unclicking the "turn off touchpad while typing" button, but then I can't type because my cursor jumps around so much. It seems that if a feature is available it should work or be fixed, so not using this feature doesn't seem like a 'fix' to me.
