Here is some new information:

- I can boot into recovery mode.
- From there I can modprobe the "rtl8180" module, which works fine.
- lsmod shows that the module is loaded and used by these other modules: 
"mac80211", "eeprom_93cx6", "cfg80211".
- I then configure the wlan0 interface in /etc/network/interfaces
- As soon as I try to bring up the wlan0 interface (ifup wlan0), the system 
freezes

This means, the freeze does not occur until I try to bring up the
interface. Modprobe is not the point of failure.
