This is very interesting. I decided to install Gnome (sudo apt-get install gnome-session fallback) and remove Unity (sudo apt-get remove unity). This in turn removed ubuntu-desktop and the Gnome was unusuable (no launcher, just plain desktop). So I reinstalled unity (sudo apt-get install unity) and now the stylus is working. I suspect it is because ubuntu-desktop got reinstalled as well.
And indeed something in Xorg.log.0 got changed (see attached file) -- the input devices got renumbered. Eraser is now registering too.
