More information: I don't think this is a cable issue. Pass-through DTS 5.1 works with VLC using "ALSA audio output" [HDA NVidia: ALC1200 Digital (hw:0,3)] on the optical connection but not AC3. Dolby Digital 3/2 displays on receiver but no sound. This was the exact situation with Mythtv some months ago before, for reasons lost to me, everything started working perfectly. Not sure this is relevant, but on Mythtv audio configuration, unchecking Dolby Digital removes the 5.1 speaker configuration option even though DTS is still checked; the reverse scenario does not apply.
