Further information regarding events that led to this problem.

1 Using software centre I installed "gnome-panel" i.e. gnome fallback
2 Using gnome classic (aka fallback) with no effects I installed "dconf"
3 In Gnome classic I used "dconf" to show desktop icons (i.e.
org->gnome->desktop->background->ticked "show desktop icons")
4 Then using dconf I had to un-tick and then tick computer, trash and
home icons to display them on desktop

Then noticed Firefox would not open webpages reporting a security error.
Switched back to Ubuntu Unity and found Firefox had the same problem and
when I used the "appearance" setting to change the screen background to
a solid colour graphics problems resulted making the screen unusable.

In an attempt to resolve the problem

1. I went back to Ubuntu classic and using dconf reset the "show desktop
icons" settings to the previous settings. Ubuntu unity graphics problem
with solid colour background still present.

2 Restarted in Ubuntu 2D and using the software centre removed
"gnome-panel". Ubuntu unity graphics problem with solid colour
background still present.

3. Changed the Nvidia restricted driver. Ubuntu unity graphics problem
with solid colour background still present. Nvidia graphics driver
return to recommended.

4. Using software centre removed "Firefox" and replaced it with Google
Chromium. Internet now available. Ubuntu unity graphics problem with
solid colour background still present.

Now going to use Ubuntu 2D until further updates are available to fix
the problem as this appears to be more stable.

I hope this helps to resolve the problem.
