I have been running Ubuntu 11.10 for a few weeks now, with the USB-
parallel cable cotinuing to work. Seeing the above request, I put the
parallel PCI card back in and tried to set up the printer, which is what
froze the machine under Ubuntu 10.10.

I am happy to report that nothing untoward happened under or after the
setup procedure. Unfortunately, I have mislaid my parallel-printer
cable, and cannot confirm that the printer actually will print anything.
