Since smtp_always_send_ehlo = yes is the default, it's unlikely that adding that to your main.cf would make a difference.
Problems like this are often related to a firewall in between the servers. Google PIX SMTP fixup for examples. Do you have data from verbose logs or on the wire capture at the Postfix box that confirms HELO is being sent?
