Where are you seeing it as claimed as set?  Are you looking at some
other set of logs?

You mentioned you had tried this:

$ xrandr --auto --output VGA1 --mode 1920x1080 --right-of LVDS1
$ xrandr --auto --output LVDS1 --mode 1440x900 --left-of VGA1

I'm not sure of that syntax though.  Can you test this?

$ xrandr --output VGA1 --auto --right-of LVDS1 --auto

If you find a sequence that results in X freezing, please collect an
i915_error_state and file a new report.  Let's focus this bug on just
the non-functioning external monitor.
