I did more tests and I found that the bug doesn't occur if I set the
memory mode in BIOS to:
DDR2-667 instead of -800
It looks like the memory is bad but that's probably not true for the
following reasons:
-both the memory and the motherboard are spec'ed for DDR2-800
-the same memory has worked at -800 for several years on a different
motherboard with no problems
-most importantly: memtest doesn't detect any problem with the memory
It would be quite weird if the memory was bad, memtest didn't detect
it in a full pass (about 10mins) but playing a video hits a problem
after a few seconds.
I suspect the problem is more complex and it might involve the memory
controller or the reserved memory or something else.
I'll keep testing when I get a chance.
Please let me know if there are tests that can clarify this situation.
