I booted into rescue mode and checked my filesystem. It did several
similar 'changes' into my filesystem to which I must approve manually
one-by-one. However, on the boot after the next one, I got a kernel
panic.

I've reformatted my / partition (in which all the directories but /home
reside--if that info might help), and reinstalled Ubuntu 12.04 and then
upgraded everything. The bug didn't happen again.
