Interesting ! I have had that too. Mine looked like a garbled shell. I could see chars appear when I typed but it wast A-Z text that was displayed.
I have read today that it could be X server that is crashing which results in the login screen being shown. When I get home I will check the Xorg.0.log file in /var/log for errors.
