I just download the latest driver from nvidia, boot without X in 
runlevel 3, and compile the driver myself.
Works for ubuntu 10.04, 11.04, 11.10.
Recently I installed a bunch of Ubuntu updates (I refused the nvidia 
updates), and again: a black screen.
But recompiling the driver fixed it.
