It works now.

If I use the attached xorg.conf I can see the 1600x1200 resolution in
Xorg.0.log. It is not "autoselected" by Xorg, though, but I can select
it manually with xrandr. (Modeline adapted from
http://wiki.x.org/wiki/FAQVideoModes#Setting_up_a_Dell_2001FP_LCD)
