Update: I installed latest v3.3 kernel as instructed and as before i had
a problem with the install, I think its to do with building the broadcom
driver. Anyway, I got borrowed an ethernet cable and connected to the
internet since the wireless was not working. I went through a typical
usage sessing and tried to shutdown and it worked. I repeated this 2
more times and each time is did power the computer of properly.

So may be it has been fixed in the latest v3.3 kernel.
