The problem persists if I revert both 1) /etc/lightdm/unity-greeter.conf and 2) the default background file ( /usr/share/backgrounds/warty-final- ubuntu.png ) to original state. It means the bug should affect all Precise users.
The background at the login-screen seems to change from "all purple with dots" to "warty-final-ubuntu.png" to the wall-paper set by process mentioned in the bug.
