So after uninstalling the latest sshfs that is packaged with Precise and then installing the version from Oneric that is located here http://packages.ubuntu.com/oneiric/amd64/sshfs/download I can confirm that the version with Precise does indeed have an issue. The version from Oneric mounted my sshfs shares just fine with no issues.
