OutlandishFlamingo, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .
If it remains an issue, could you run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report. apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number> Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream- testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'. If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'. If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'. Please let us know your results. Thanks in advance. ** Tags added: needs-upstream-testing ** Description changed: Binary package hint: xorg Upon booting up my laptop, I'm welcomed to a black screen (black as in there is no backlight, but I can see that the login screen is displayed if I look very closely). To actually be able to see the login screen, I need to close my screen for a few seconds and then open it again. After doing so, everything is displayed with full brightness. Unfortunately, full brightness is all I could get. I can't adjust the brightness at all. If I press the keys that should reduce the brightness, I get the brightness bar showing me that it's registering that I'm pressing the buttons (the bar fills up or empties accordingly), but the brightness never actually changes. I've tried going into screen preferences and sliding the brightness bar manually, but the brightness still doesn't change. I tried to do a clean install but I couldn't because the installer had no light at all and closing and opening my screen didn't help. I also had this problem with 10.10, except there was a certain kernel that was able to load with the back light and everything, so I kept using that (unfortunately, even that didn't let me change the brightness settings, it was just good enough for me not to have to close and open my screen). + WORKAROUND: https://launchpad.net/~kamalmostafa/+archive/linux-kamal- + mjgbacklight + ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 11.04 Package: xorg 1:7.6+4ubuntu3 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.38-8.42-generic 2.6.38.2 Uname: Linux 2.6.38-8-generic x86_64 Architecture: amd64 CompizPlugins: [core, bailer, detection, composite, opengl, decor, mousepoll, vpswitch, regex, animation, snap, expo, move, compiztoolbox, place, grid, imgpng, gnomecompat, wall, ezoom, workarounds, staticswitcher, resize, fade, unitymtgrabhandles, scale, session, unityshell] CompositorRunning: compiz DRM.card0.DP.1: - status: disconnected - enabled: disabled - dpms: Off - modes: - edid-base64: + status: disconnected + enabled: disabled + dpms: Off + modes: + edid-base64: DRM.card0.HDMI.A.1: - status: disconnected - enabled: disabled - dpms: Off - modes: - edid-base64: + status: disconnected + enabled: disabled + dpms: Off + modes: + edid-base64: DRM.card0.LVDS.1: - status: connected - enabled: enabled - dpms: On - modes: 1600x900 - edid-base64: AP///////wAw5MoBAAAAAAASAQOAJhV4CqjAnVhQmiYcUFQAAAABAQEBAQEBAQEBAQEBAQEBLyZAuGCEDDAwMCMAftcQAAAZAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA/gAAAABMR0Rpc3BsYXkKAAAA/gBMUDE3M1dEMS1UTEExAHg= + status: connected + enabled: enabled + dpms: On + modes: 1600x900 + edid-base64: AP///////wAw5MoBAAAAAAASAQOAJhV4CqjAnVhQmiYcUFQAAAABAQEBAQEBAQEBAQEBAQEBLyZAuGCEDDAwMCMAftcQAAAZAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA/gAAAABMR0Rpc3BsYXkKAAAA/gBMUDE3M1dEMS1UTEExAHg= DRM.card0.VGA.1: - status: disconnected - enabled: disabled - dpms: Off - modes: - edid-base64: + status: disconnected + enabled: disabled + dpms: Off + modes: + edid-base64: Date: Fri Apr 29 18:21:35 2011 DistUpgraded: Fresh install DistroCodename: natty DistroVariant: ubuntu DkmsStatus: virtualbox-ose, 4.0.4, 2.6.38-8-generic, x86_64: installed GraphicsCard: - Intel Corporation Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:0046] (rev 12) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller]) - Subsystem: Acer Incorporated [ALI] Device [1025:031c] + Intel Corporation Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:0046] (rev 12) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller]) + Subsystem: Acer Incorporated [ALI] Device [1025:031c] InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS "Lucid Lynx" - Release amd64 (20100816.1) MachineType: Gateway NV79 ProcEnviron: - LANGUAGE=en_CA:en - LANG=en_CA.UTF-8 - SHELL=/bin/bash + LANGUAGE=en_CA:en + LANG=en_CA.UTF-8 + SHELL=/bin/bash ProcKernelCmdLine: BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.38-8-generic root=UUID=b5bca626-d072-4f0f-8f62-22aeb2f98e50 ro quiet splash vt.handoff=7 Renderer: Unknown SourcePackage: xorg Symptom: display UpgradeStatus: No upgrade log present (probably fresh install) dmi.bios.date: 01/05/2010 dmi.bios.vendor: Gateway dmi.bios.version: V1.05 dmi.board.asset.tag: Base Board Asset Tag dmi.board.name: NV79 dmi.board.vendor: Gateway dmi.board.version: V1.05 dmi.chassis.type: 10 dmi.chassis.vendor: Gateway dmi.chassis.version: V1.05 dmi.modalias: dmi:bvnGateway:bvrV1.05:bd01/05/2010:svnGateway:pnNV79:pvrV1.05:rvnGateway:rnNV79:rvrV1.05:cvnGateway:ct10:cvrV1.05: dmi.product.name: NV79 dmi.product.version: V1.05 dmi.sys.vendor: Gateway version.compiz: compiz 1:0.9.4+bzr20110415-0ubuntu2 version.ia32-libs: ia32-libs 20090808ubuntu13 version.libdrm2: libdrm2 2.4.23-1ubuntu6 version.libgl1-mesa-dri: libgl1-mesa-dri 7.10.2-0ubuntu2 version.libgl1-mesa-dri-experimental: libgl1-mesa-dri-experimental N/A version.libgl1-mesa-glx: libgl1-mesa-glx 7.10.2-0ubuntu2 version.xserver-xorg: xserver-xorg 1:7.6+4ubuntu3 version.xserver-xorg-video-ati: xserver-xorg-video-ati 1:6.14.0-0ubuntu4 version.xserver-xorg-video-intel: xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.14.0-4ubuntu7 version.xserver-xorg-video-nouveau: xserver-xorg-video-nouveau 1:0.0.16+git20110107+b795ca6e-0ubuntu7 ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed => Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/773691 Title: No brigthness on Gateway Nv7915u laptop To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/773691/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list [email protected] https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
