Naming the override file unity-greeter.override did not work for me.

According to http://developer.gnome.org/gio/2.32/GSettings.html, Vendor
Overrides: "... glib-compile-schemas expects schema files to have the extension
.gschema.override".

When I renamed the file to: com.canonical.unity-greeter.gschema.override
then ran sudo glib-compile-schemas /usr/share/glib-2.0/schemas/
and rebooted, I got the desired result.

This doesn't seem like a good solution to me. User customizations
should be done via the system settings console.
