What is aspera? The Latin for "hope." It's some high-speed file
transfer software. But I'm stumped to see that word here. Jost Menke,
what do you mean?

Now on my second day after installing the kernel whose .deb you linked
to (HP Compaq nc6400, Ubuntu 10.4), and so far the old symptoms have
only shown up once. (Kernel freeze, perhaps, because the keyboard,
mousepad, and all onboard inputs cease to have any effect, and only
powering down is possible, yet the screen doesn't freeze.)

The one freeze incident coincided with having try to re-connect to
some Boingo Hotspot which was being unusually difficult. The problem
has long seemed tied to high room temperatures, and the use of
wireless. Could be that these simply give the kernel more to do,
making some collision more likely?

Anyway, this fix is testing well so far. Thanks, Jost!
